Curiosity is not an excuse for carelessness. Our goal is to ask better questions, verify what can be known and clearly distinguish reporting from interpretation.
Accuracy and verification
Material facts are checked against available primary records, official statements, direct interviews and reputable reporting. Developing stories may change as new information becomes available. We identify uncertainty rather than presenting assumptions as settled fact.
Sourcing and attribution
Information taken from another publication, public record, interview, statement or dataset should be attributed and linked when practical. Anonymous sourcing is used cautiously and only when the information is important, the source is in a position to know it and identification could create a legitimate risk.
Fairness and context
Fairness does not require treating every claim as equally credible. It does require representing relevant perspectives accurately, avoiding distortions and giving people or organizations a meaningful opportunity to respond when serious allegations concern them.
Reporting, analysis and opinion
News reporting centers verifiable facts. Analysis adds context and interpretation. Essays and commentary may reflect a clear point of view. Headlines, labels and story framing should help readers understand which kind of work they are reading.
Corrections, clarifications and updates
When a factual error is confirmed, we correct it promptly and identify a meaningful correction in the story. A clarification improves wording or context without changing the underlying facts. An update adds new, relevant information to a developing story. Minor spelling, grammar and formatting fixes may be made without a note.
